30 Things I’ve learnt in 30 years | Lesson 11-20

11. Be your own Cheerleader

Sometimes it’s great when I’m in a space where doubt is trying to creep in to have someone encourage me. However, I’ve learnt the value in saying “Sandjena! You can do this!”, “Sandjena, you are worthy”, “Well done gurl, you did Good!!!”

When that encouragement is coming from me, my own voice, it’s so much more powerful. The words I speak to and about myself are the most important because the represent what I think and feel about who I am.

12. Protect your Circle

“Show me your friends and I’ll tell you who you are,” is a common phrase I’ve heard. I have come to see the truth in it. Who I surround myself with helps me to protect my peace and my progress.

I am a naturally encouraging, positive and majority of the time bubbly person, I’m careful not to stay around negative people for too long. Negativity has a way of sucking the life out of things.

I don’t want to be a yes person or have yes people in my life. Having people that will tell me the truth in love especially the hard truth, when it needs to be said. 

We don’t get to choose our family, but we can choose if we’re around them. We get to choose our friends. 

13. The Power of Choice

We are constantly making choices in every single thing we do.

We can’t control some things that happen to us but we do have control of how we respond.

14. Remain Teachable and Curious

“Huh, you learn something new everyday” is one of those phrases a use a lot! Because I’m constantly learning new things. 

“What I believe is that all clear-minded people should remain two things throughout their lifetimes: Curious and teachable.” ― Roger Ebert

To keep growing we must keep learning. To make new discoveries and innovate we must allow ourselves to be curious.

15. Face your Fears

What I’ve learned about fear is that it’s misdirected faith. It takes the same amount of energy to have faith as it does to have fear. Sometimes you have to take a risk. 

I used to say I’d never get on a motorbike, because of the dangers attached to it.

However, when I did get on one with a friend, I felt so free it was unbelievable. I even thought seriously about purchasing one for myself, but I reasoned that I should probably get a bicycle first. I purchased roller-skate instead.

Facing fears the little ones and the big ones too. Expose yourself to things outside your comfort zone, beyond your comfort zone is really where life begins. 

16. Distractions are no one’s friend

Has this ever happened to you? You sit down to meditate or write or to spend quality time with a loved one and your mind starts to wonder off to the 10 different things you need to do and people you need to contact?

Distraction is a form of procrastination. Even writing this blog post I have had to be so super intentional to not look at my phone. I get distracted soo easily!! It’s actually ridiculous but it’s something I’m working on.

Putting my phone in areas I can’t reach or see it when I’m working. Parking or writing them down thoughts that come up until I’ve finished the task at hand before I engage them.

17. Do the things that bring you Joy, even if it’s not cool to other people

It’s so easy to want to fit in with others to make life ‘easier’ but at points it makes life a lot less fun. There are activities that I like that other people would find boring and unpopular but I’m not them and they’re not me. I’m ok with that.

18. Don’t let other people’s opinions control you life

“What people think of me is none of my business”

This statement is becoming a favourite of mine because it helps with the chatter that goes on in my mind. I find that when I’m doing a task that is overwhelming or unfamiliar and I’m feeling insecure, there’s a lot of negative chatter that goes on in my head. 

Rarely is it just me thinking my own thoughts, majority of the time I’m thinking about what Harry or Jane is thinking. When in actual fact they may not be thinking anything that I think they’re thinking. 

Although I can tell based on a person’s track record or personality what they may be thinking, it’s not in my best interest to assume anything. If I make an assumption, I want it to be an encouraging thought, not a critical one. I’m learning to get other people out of my head. 

19. Generosity 

Generosity is defined as “showing a readiness to give more of something, especially money, than is strictly necessary or expected.”

I know the definition says especially money. However! There are a variety of ways we can show generosity by serving others through our Time, Skills, Acts of kindness, Words of encouragement, Resources, Finances, Connections, etc. Get creative!

20. Napping is an art

Napping for some is child’s play but I beg to differ.

According to Mayoclinic, napping offers various benefits for healthy adults, including:

  • Relaxation
  • Reduced fatigue
  • Increased alertness
  • Improved mood
  • Improved performance, including quicker reaction time and better memory

It’s preferable to nap before 3pm as this is less likely to interrupt your night time rest. If you suffer from any sleeping disorder this may not be the best thing for you to do.
